US Hunger Strikers and Human Rights Activists Rally on Wednesday, June 26

News // Film

Washington, D.C. – Weeks past President Obama’s speech announcing his renewed intention to close Guantanamo, human rights activists — including three US military veterans on open-ended fasts in solidarity with hunger striking Guantanamo detainees — will stage dramatic protests on Wednesday, June 26th at the White House calling on the President to turn his promise into action.

140 days into the hunger strike at Guantánamo, members of Witness Against Torture and other groups will lay 86 black cloths, each with the name of a Guantánamo prisoner cleared for transfer, on the sidewalk of the White House to dramatize the demand that the President begin transferring men from the prison facility.

In response to the hunger strike of Guantánamo detainees, several US citizens have for weeks been on open-ended fasts, suffering the health effects of sustained hunger. They hope with their immense sacrifice to draw attention to the plight of the Guantánamo detainees and force the President to act.

“What is happening in Guantánamo is despicable,” says Elliott Adams, a former paratrooper in Vietnam on hunger strike since May 17. “The continued detention of innocent men is a violation of our moral and religious principles, domestic and international law. It goes against the values I thought the American flag stood for when I was a young man in the Army. I just can’t sit and enjoy my life when my country is doing such terrible things.”

Diane Wilson, a former Army medic and fourth-generation shrimp boat captain from Texas who has lost 50 pounds in over 56 days, says, “I know who this American fisherwoman is and where I stand. I stand in solidarity with the Guantánamo prisoners and I will fast indefinitely until justice for them comes.”

Veterans For Peace national board member Tarak Kauff, on hunger strike since June 8, says, “It is up to human beings of conscience to take the risks, step out of our comfort zones and do our utmost to end the nightmare of Guantánamo. If we do not act now, our children and their children will reap the bitter results of our cowardice: an America without basic rights and a world without justice.”

The US hunger strikers amplify the “rolling fast,” organized by Witness Against Torture, in which hundreds of United States citizens have fasted in support of the hunger strikers at Guantánamo.

“It should not take people denying themselves food, whether in Guantánamo or in the US, to have President Obama stand up for the Constitution and human rights,” says Matt Daloisio, organizer with Witness Against Torture. “The renewed promise to close Guantánamo is important, but without immediate steps to release people, it is only another promise.”

What: Protest to Close Guantánamo on the UN International Day for Survivors of Torture

Where: The White House

Hunger Strike – Day 134 Update

Fast for Justice 2013 // Film

Dear Friends:

As I write this email, Guantanamo has been open for 4,177 days.

In a major speech on national security on May 23, President Obama promised to begin releasing the 86 prisoners still held at Guantanamo Bay who were cleared to leave by his inter-agency task force in January 2010 but are still held.

It has been 27 DAYS since President Obama’s speech.  0 men have been released.

There can be No More Excuses on Guantanamo.  We will be judged by our actions, not our speeches.

Please JOIN US TO ACT on behalf of the men who remain detained.

Witness Against Torture and allies are making plans to mark June 26, the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, by calling on our political leaders to close Guantanamo in a fair and just way, end US torture, and begin making amends to those persecuted by US detention policy.

Join us on June 26TH in DC or your own community.  Sign yourself and your community up to participate in the rolling fast.  Support those in the US who are engaging in an open ended fast in solidarity with the men in Guantanamo.  Visit the new Guantanamo Grassroots Coalition website www.closegitmo.net for news, videos, and lots of information.

Through our relationships with lawyers traveling to Guantanamo, word of our work has been reaching the men detained there.  Their sacrifice has provided the space for this movement to grow.  Now our work continues, and it is more crucial now than ever before to keep the pressure on.

Peace-

Matt Daloisio

WAT Friday Fast for Justice

Hunger Strike Response // Film

We are inviting you to join WAT’s Friday Fast for Justice — a tradition we’ve held for many years (read the full history here). If you join the fast, we would ask you to:

1. Fast on Friday, in any form you like

Go without food in solidarity with the hunger strikers in Guantánamo.

2. Make three phone calls to:

1) The White House (202-456-1111 or 202-456-1414) urging President Obama to declassify the executive summary and major findings of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on CIA torture swiftly and in their entirety, as well as to fulfill his promise to close Guantánamo

2) U.S. Southern Command (305-437-1213) to decry the conditions at Guantánamo especially force feeding policy and humiliating body searches that prisoners are subjected to.

3) Call one of the following senators about the The Detaining Terrorists to Protect America Act of 2015 (S. 165). On February, 12th, the Senate Armed Services Committee approved legislation authored by Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH that would effectively ban all transfers and ensure that Guantánamo remains open. We are asking people to call their senators and the key senators below preemptively to show our opposition. The amendment would restore a blanket-ban on all transfers of prisoners to Yemen. It punishes men by the simple virtue of their national origin and is irrespective of the particulars of their cases. Prisoners can be safely repatriated to Yemen, and should be done so without legislative obstacle. We are urging Senators to vote “no” on S.165. It would only doom many of the men in Guantánamo to continued miserable and open-ended detention.

Senators to Call:
Senator Mark Begich: (202) 224-3004
Senator Bob Casey: (202) 224-6324
Senator Jeff Flake: (202) 224-4521
Senator Heidi Heitkamp: (202) 224-2043
Senator Angus King: (202) 224-5344
Senator Mary Landrieu: (202) 224-5824
Senator Joe Manchin: (202) 224-3954
Senator John McCain: (202) 224-2235
Senator Bill Nelson: (202) 224-5274
Senator Rand Paul: (202) 224-4343
Senator Jeanne Shaheen: (202) 224-2841
Senator Debbie Stabenow: (202) 224-4822
Senator Jon Tester: (202) 224 2644
Senator John Walsh: (202) 224 2651
Senator Mark Warner:(202) 224-2023

Example script for Senators: I am fasting for 24 hours in solidarity with the prisoners at Guantanamo, especially for those who are on hunger strike. I am calling today to urge you to oppose The Detaining Terrorists to Protect America Act of 2015 (S. 165). This legislation punishes the men in Guantánamo by the simple virtue of their national origin and is irrespective of the particulars of their cases. Prisoners can be safely repatriated to Yemen, and should be done so without legislative obstacle. I are urging you to vote no on S. 165, when it is entered onto the senate floor. Such legislation would doom the men in Guantánamo to miserable and open-ended detention. Rather. I am asking you to support the releasing of the all those clear for release, end the inhumane of practice of force feeding and support legislation that moves towards closing the prison camp in Guantanamo.

Example script for White House and U.S. Southern Command:
I am fasting for 24 hours in solidarity with the prisoners at Guantánamo, especially for those who are on hunger strike. I am calling today out of concern for them and for the rest of the prisoners. I am asking you to resume releasing the number of prisoners on hunger strike and to stop the inhumane practice of force feeding. Lastly, the US must set free those cleared for release and close Guantanamo.3. Write to a prisoner at Guantánamo.

3. Write to a Prisoner at Guantánamo.

letter

Choose a prisoner’s name off the list  at the Amnesty International website. There is also a sample letter that  can be downloaded and printed off here. The address to send the letter to is:

Detainee Name

Gitmo Is Killing Me

Hunger Strike Response // Film

Dear Friends:

This is perhaps the most important (and devastating) article about Guantanamo in quite some time.  Please take a moment to read.  And share.  And act. (see links at bottom)

Gitmo Is Killing Me

By SAMIR NAJI al HASAN MOQBEL

Published: April 14, 2013

GUANTÁNAMO BAY, Cuba

ONE man here weighs just 77 pounds. Another, 98. Last thing I knew, I weighed 132, but that was a month ago.

I’ve been on a hunger strike since Feb. 10 and have lost well over 30 pounds. I will not eat until they restore my dignity.

I’ve been detained at Guantánamo for 11 years and three months. I have never been charged with any crime. I have never received a trial.

I could have been home years ago — no one seriously thinks I am a threat — but still I am here. Years ago the military said I was a “guard” for Osama bin Laden, but this was nonsense, like something out of the American movies I used to watch. They don’t even seem to believe it anymore. But they don’t seem to care how long I sit here, either.

National Day of Action: April 11th

Hunger Strike Response // Film

National Day of Action
Right now, the men detained at the U.S. prison in Guantánamo are engaged in a large-scale hunger strike, which began in early February. Some are now in critical condition. The vast majority of the 166 men have been held for more than 11 years without any charge or fair trial, with no end to their detention in sight. The Obama administration must take swift measures to humanely address the immediate causes of the hunger strike and fulfill its promise to close Guantánamo without further delay.

The Center for Constitutional Rights, Witness Against Torture, World Can’t Wait and other groups are calling for an emergency National Day of Action on April 11 to demand the closure of Guantánamo and an end to indefinite detention.
